“Gordon Brown avoided a leadership election, bottled a general election and now wants to fiddle the electoral system,”

The Supreme Court today struck down two orders in council that allow the government to freeze financial assets of terrorist suspects. Passed without Parliament’s approval and contrary to umpteen acts of Parliament, they were clearly unconstitutional, and the decision was the right one: another indication that the Supreme Court works.
In striking it down, Justice Hope said:
Even in the face of the threat of international terrorism, the safety of the people is not the supreme law. We must be just as careful to guard against unrestrained encroachments on personal liberty.
Personal liberty is the supreme law? We’ll take that.

Today’s Quote of the Day, and surely the entire festive period, is pretty straight-forward. Well, here are the nine most liberating words in the English language:
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me.
- Rage Against the Machine
Reagan said that the nine most terrifying words in the English language were, “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.” But, hell, Rage’s message is a teeny bit more powerful. I hope the government gets it loud and clear…
Quote of the Day: Deutsche Edition

This comes from the coalition agreement just signed between the Christian Democrats (Ed; boo, hiss!) and the Free Democrats (Ed: Yay? Ish) in Germany. Take a peek and tell us it’s not sound.
Which, in case you don’t speak the language of Goethe, Schiller, and Hitler (Ed: you’re worse than TTT), broadly translates as:
First, we will strengthen the motivation and incentives of the employee and the employer, quickly and clearly, by immediately lowering tax, reducing bureaucratic obstacles, and creating more incentives, whilst making regular employment worthwhile for all those on social security.
Wait, doesn’t that last part sound familiar? If Gordon Brown still thinks the Conservatives are isolated in Europe just because they condemn Downing Street’s neo-socialist economics, he obviously can’t read German.

One eager YBF delegate certainly wins with his or her (Ed: but mostly her) effusive assault on the myth of the genial German in a question to Dan Hannan:
We’ve got to keep an eye on the Germans and make sure they don’t get all antsy about their borders every 60 years and, you know… march into Czechoslovakia.
Oo-er.

Diane Abbott criticising Question Time inviting on Nick Griffin:
If you are a black or Asian viewer tonight and you switch on the television and you see Nick Griffin on Question Time – it’s not a programme that’s going to scrutinise his views, it’s not that sort of programme, it’s politics as entertainment.
Is that because your programme just afterwards is so edgy and incisive, Diane?

This Week is serious business.
Quote of the Day: People’s Republic Edition

Forget Labour Party conference. The big left-wing rally is out in the Far East to celebrate tomorrow’s 60th anniversary of the Red People’s Republic of China. According to one Taiwanese soldier, it’s worth celebrating because:
I really want to see the Chinese female soldiers parading in their mini-skirts.
Good on ya. Having spent far too long in Brighton, we can confirm there aren’t any Labour female soldiers wearing any mini-skirts around these parts. And for shame.
Baroness Scotland this, Evening Standard that…

I know, I know. KeepRightOnline hasn’t chimed in on the Baroness Scotland farce yet. With good reason, too. Anyone…. ANYONE, who thinks this woman is not obscenely guilty and needs to resign or be sacked immediately, is nothing but a New Labour spokesperson or blind sympathiser. The whole thing is a travesty of justice and a remarkably accurate depiction of the past 12 years of Labour Government. One rule for you, another rule for us, eh lads?
Quote of the day goes to Mr. Christian May, of CF NME fame:
“Inadvertence” has become the ‘get out of jail free card’ for this Government.
Worst headline of the day however, goes to the Evening Standard. Sort it out, guys!

Sullivan’s Diary, the homepage of Patrick Sullivan, former (and excellent) National Campaigns Director and currently Head of Student Life at Conservative Future has a great rallying cry to all activists today. Heed it well dear chums. The most crucial hour is upon us.
Complacency is our greatest enemy and never before has it been so important that we get out and hit the streets. Voters want to see a party working hard in their local area to deliver real change, and Conservative Future can play a significant role in this.
- Patrick Sullivan
Patrick is 22, from Chelsea and on the Area Executive for North West London. Whilst studying for his undergraduate degree at Nottingham University, he was Finance Officer of the Athletics Union and received a Students’ Union prize for his involvement in organising charitable events. Patrick likes to spend his spare time either at the gym or socialising with friends. (Ed: Why no mention of Crazy Larry’s?!)
