Something Rotten in the State of Britain
Posted on 02. Oct, 2009 by OHC in United Kingdom
Something’s definitely rotten if the (soon-not-to-be) governing party’s candidates think that the government should be tracking all alcohol and tobacco purchases with Drinkers’ Licences.
‘Orwellian’ is an overused term, but this is just that. It is an attempt to track and control everyone’s everyday life, with scant justification except by waving vaguely at the promise of more efficient delivery of government services that ought to be efficiently-delivered as a matter of course. In this case, it’s the NHS. The government already makes £8.5bn a year off alcohol duty (on top of which, VAT, pub licensing fees, fines…). The nanny-statists wail that alcohol costs the NHS £2.7bn, and so MUST be more stringently regulated, including with minimum prices. I’m sure you see the arithmetic fallacy in their argument.
Perhaps it’s all just an indictment of the worship of the NHS, rather than of personal responsibility. Is the world really so cowardly that it submits our entire society to making the irreconcilably inefficient NHS the teeniest bit more efficient? We don’t support military conscription to boost the flagging armed forces (Ed: and rightly so), so why on Earth do we support enslaving our citizenry to save the NHS a fraction of a penny on the pound?
For the second time today, online Labourites are launching an attack on a free society. For the second time, we will say NO! (Ed: hey, that sounds familiar…)
#welovetheNHS? Part 2

Of course this #welovetheNHS row has been going on for a few weeks now. The Labour Party quickly adopted said hashtag on Twitter as a retort to the comments made by Daniel Hannan MEP that they felt demeaned or devalued socialised healthcare. (Ed: Did you just say ’socialised healthcare?!)
Far from claiming this is entirely true, KeepRightOnline noticed a tweet today by the infamous Dizzy, regarding the establishment of the #welovethenhs hashtag. See the picture below for details.
Say it ain’t so Prezza? It’s not like you to jump on a bandwagon, and if it were, well…
What's Mandy in for?

The government’s press officers have said that Peter Mandelson has been hospitalised for a ‘benign condition of the prostate’. We have not been told what that condition is.
What we do know is that the hospital he’s in, St Mary’s in Paddington, is:
An internationally renowned centre of excellence for the diagnosis, treatment and care of people with sexual health problems, including sexually transmitted diseases.
We wish him the best of luck with the operation. But, come on, what have you got up to this time, Mandy?
John Prescott. Why, universe? Why?

A lot of people have questioned over the past few weeks, my unrelenting retorts to @JohnPrescott, one Mr. Blair’s former lackie, and now Commander-in-Chief of Labour’s Online Army of Deception. With his trusty padawan, @KerryMP and plenty of help, I’m sure- Prezza has declared himself the “King of Twitter” and challenged various people (who wouldn’t be seen dead around him) to “Twitter debates” and other blogging banter.
It’s by no means statesman-like behaviour from the former First Secretary of State, as John attempts to goad political opponents into non-debates and claims victory through non-participation of the wiser party. Unfortunately, John- some people have day jobs. I wonder what the people of your constituency would think to know all you do all day long is sit at the laptop or blackberry thinking of tenuous and childish ways to try and destablise your foes? If I were a constituent of Hull East, I’d sooner vote Socialist Worker’s Party than for this twat twitterer. (Ed: Uh… really?)
John’s recent tirades have been against David Cameron, Andrew Lansley, Daniel Hannan and George Osborne, and his activities on the shabby, “GoFourth.co.uk” are funded centrally by the Labour Party. So what has he achieved? Well, a quick look at the UK Polling Report average polling figures puts the Tories squarely on 42 points, the Lib Dems on 19 and Labour on a measly 27. Good job, John! That’s a mighty fine use of time.
Finally, I’d like to pass comment on how Prescott is actually more likely worsening the situation for the Labour Party.
No one even knows who’s leading the Party and the country currently, with Mandelson vying for power, Harperson looking to purge Labour of all men and Miliband twiddling his schoolboy-like moustache in the wings. John’s emergence from the murky depths of anonymity have further blurred the lines between who is really the driving force in this farce of a government. His negative and tactless spin further implicates Labour in their negative campaigning ways- and his baseless accusations will only firm up what the public already know. Labour STILL isn’t working- and nor should Prezza be.

I’m sure you’ve seen this hashtag floating about. It’s Prezza’s Labour’s ‘response’ to the Daniel Hannan non-story that’s been about for the past week or so. Before we go any further I should mention:
But the story that has emerged today is that Labour might love the NHS (maybe even half as much as the Tories do) but they don’t particularly love the people who USE the NHS.
See here for the latest critique from Shadow Health Secretary Andrew Lansley on Labour’s inability to curtail superbugs and infections within the NHS. All this on the day that we learn NHS sickness is rife, and over 50% higher than private sector equivalents. Ouch.
Setting the record straight.

A good morning for fair and balanced discourse. Lately, sensationalist headlines have been dominating ’silly season’ about the so called ’split’ within the Conservative Party. Our greatest representatives have been labelled eccentrics (a title I would be quite pleased to have bestowed upon me) and been critiqued heavily for their prescience and downright ballsyness.
KeepRightOnline got fed up with the half truths and decided to pencil this short paragraph for the letters section in the Metro. Perhaps we’ll slowly set the record straight.
End of discussion.

I’m sure this has been thrown around quite a bit in the past few months, but for those of you who haven’t seen it- good old Ronald Reagan sets out here why precisely, we need to curtail the advancement of socialised medicine, and put the freedom back into people’s hands.
In Britain, I’m not calling for the eradication of the NHS, but rather for it to do what it should do best- that is, swift, efficient front line (not optional) treatments, without all the statist bureaucracy and red flags tape. Reducing the remit and expenditure on the NHS (again, no front-line cuts) would allow us to put money back in the taxpayer’s pocket, for their own choice (save for health, buy a TV, invest in education… so on and so forth) and still maintain a free at the point of service system for those who require it.
I’ll leave it to President Reagan from here. The US is facing difficult decisions. This man had the prescience to address them decades ago.
Oh and here’s something for @Tom_Earnshaw… (one of many sources that I can cite)
What's Prezza holding?

We at KeepRightOnline have watched this NHS debate unfold and the demagogues do what they do best; rabble rouse with not a lot of substance. Prezza’s selective stats in his video is truly proof of this. I think in reality, people are getting the debate mixed up, which is no less the fault of the relentless (and good on them, I guess) left wing media/blogosphere.
The issue with the NHS is not with the doctors or nurses, not the paramedics and front line staff, but rather with the quangos and consultants, the bloat and the bloodsuckers. The NHS as an institution is rife with the latter, and this is what needs urgent reform, and stripping to it’s core.
It doesn’t have to be a mistake for 60 years to be a 60 year mistake- get it? No? Well think about a relationship you’ve been in which was great for 4 months, and a drag for the remaining 8. You might look back at that as a year-long mistake. Good times were there, sure- but at what cost?
AT WHAT COST?
Kind NHS staff, those who are on the wards or in the ambulances (and all other front-liners), please understand the gripe is not with you. If you are a back-office administrator, and your job actually keeps people alive and keeps the health service functioning, the gripe is not with you. If, however, you are a clear bureaucrat, apparatchik or functionary as such; a job which complicates matters or does not need a full-time dedication- then you are the chaff of the machine.
You are the only remaining Labour constituency.
Backing Hannan. Backing The Plan.

This post was blank besides the image when it first went up towards the end of last week. The message we’re conveying couldn’t be simpler, and I have goaded @JohnPrescott relentlessly this week about his reactionary demagogy in response to the Hannan-NHS ’story’.
Dizzy has an incredible piece here which says a hell of a lot that we wanted to say, but just didn’t find the time, nor eloquence.
The key points are;
- Daniel Hannan has expressed a devout interest in improving the quality of healthcare through reform
- Daniel Hannan has had the cojones to stand up and be heard with impeccably researched facts/stats
- Daniel Hannan’s gripe was not with front line workers, but with the system they are marched about in
This is why KeepRightOnline is BACKING HANNAN and BACKING THE PLAN.

Prezza plays politics with people's lives.

Everyone’s favourite nobody, John Prescott (who has nothing whatsoever to do with GAME CHANGER *cough*) has weighed in (Ed: Oh, come on!) today on Daniel Hannan’s recent remarks to the US media regarding the state of the National Health Service.
Far from being pragmatic (what’s new?) Prezza’s tirade at Hannan stems from the fact that he wants to play political football with Britain’s health service. What a bloody good go at demagogy by the man running the NoFourth GoFourth campaign for a Labour 4th Term. (Seriously!?)
The problem here is that the public will see right through him. (Ed: Oh they just keep coming, don’t they?) John reckons Hannan espouses the complete destruction of the NHS, along with all the bells and whistles that go with it. Prezza, emulating your iconic words to Iain Dale, that time; I beg to differ!
If you had read The Plan (I’ll spot you a tenner, if you like) you’d know that Hannan (and Carswell) want precisely the best for this country’s health service; encouraging people to save for their health care, while still delivering the expected basic services (A&E etc). We can put the money and the choice in people’s pockets through tax cuts (yes, we can!) and at a time when we’re realising the extreme costs the NHS currently bears, your best idea is to borrow, tax and spend as if you’ve learnt nothing? Bugger.
So here’s the challenge John, I do hope I get a direct response:
1) Are Hannan’s statistics wrong?
2) Do you think the NHS is currently the best it could be, especially when we take into account the past 12 years of gargantuan levels of spending?
3) Does Daniel not show an inclination for the improvement of the service, rather than the inclination to play PR with people’s lives?
You’re up Prezza. Impress me.
