Edward McMillan-Scott: Lib Dems’ reluctant recruit

Edward McMillan-Scott. We’ve known that he is a snivelling Europhile for a while. His position of power is a demonstration of the EU’s contempt for democracy. So his defection to the so-called ‘Liberal’ so-called ‘Democrats’ is fitting.

The True Statesman

This afternoon’s session of Prime Minister’s Questions was, for me, the best of the year so far.  David Cameron was undoubtedly on peak form as he ravaged Labour’s complete disregard toward the Armed Forces and had to spell out for Gordon Brown that defence spending under the Conservative government decreased as, “Under the Conservatives, we won the Cold War!”

Guardian FAIL… epically.

Late last night, lefty conspirators hit that “SEND” button on their Macbooks (Ed: Don’t YOU use a Macbook?) and went to the presses on this deeply embarrassing expose on the Young Britons’ Foundation- Britain’s young free-market training organisation.  The problem is, it wasn’t embarrassing for YBF.  It was a yet another non-story in the long line of Grauniad pseudo-journalistic bias.

Make of this what you will. Prominent Liberal Democrat blogger/tweeter and Liberal Vision grandee Sara Scarlett has been spotted at the Conservative Future Christmas Party.

Over to you, Mr. Bear…

Timetable for Change!

It’s great to see that our chums at South Eastern trains are in agreement with us over the state of the government. At the South Eastern website, they proudly display the tagline (or near enough) of the Conservative Party, “It’s Time for Change!”

That it is, my friends. That it is.

The Liberty Belle: Cheers to 2010!

Posted on 09. Nov, 2009 by RK in The Liberty Belle

libertybelleTuesday, November 2nd was election day here in the U.S. — Virginia and New Jersey tossed out their blue governors and replaced them with red ones, New York City re-elected Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and New York State District 23 elected a democrat on a technicality.

Because of King Barry Obama’s nomination of Congressman John McHugh as Secretary of the Army, District 23 held a special election to replace him.

In one corner, weighing a whopping 900 billion dollars was “Republican” Dede Scozzafava, the Dem in GOP attire. She was endorsed by Newt Gingrich (that was his third strike for me), The National Rifle Association… NYSUT (largest labor union in the state), lib dem blogger Markos Moulitsas, and the Daily Kos…need I say more?

In opposition, scaling the same weight class at $1 trillion, was Independent-turned-Democrat Bill Owens.

Because New York law requires no primary and nominees are selected by party chairs, Conservatives in the district were left without a candidate to represent them.

But lo! From the shadows emerged Doug Hoffman representing the Conservative Party of New York to the rescue! Though a sound contender, Hoffman was often described by those who know him best as an “awkward” regular Joe with “no charisma” nor “any public speaking capability whatsoever.” (the guy is an accountant, give him a break!) Despite this and his third-party status, conservatism prevailed.

Three days before election, considering her conservative constituents and the recent polling data putting her in third place, http://www.newsmax.com/insidecover/hoffman_Scozzafava_/2009/10/26/277085.html?s=al&promo_code=8F67-1 Scozza dropped from the race in cowardice. She then endorsed Owens (I smell lobbyists).

Two days before election day Siena released a poll putting third-party Hoffman ahead of Owens 41% to 36%. A surge of electricity flowed across the country as the GOP opened its eyes to the true winner of elections: conservatism. They realized that the American people no longer tow the party line, but they vote on principles (wish they had learned this BEFORE nominating John McCain).

Despite having dropped out of the race, Scozzafava somehow managed to get her name on the ballot twice; one for the Republican Party and the other for the Working Families Party, who also endorsed Owens (boy was this election screwy?!)

The final score:

Owens (D) 49%

Hoffman (C) 46%

Scozza (R) 6%

46% + 6% = Majority

Despite the disappointing loss, Hoffman proved that conservatism is what the people want and, if necessary, they will elect a third-party candidate to get it.

The good news? This was a special election, which means Owens is up for re-election one year from now.

Mr. Owens, some sound advice:

When your last opponent won 45% of the vote and you did not win by majority, it would be wise not to break four campaign promises your first hour on the job.

Hoffman’s campaign website proudly reads: “Only 365 days until Election Day 2010!”

Cheers to 2010!

Friday Propaganda: Foreboding Edition

Imagine what Britain would be like in five years if Labour get in again. We’d be up crap creek without a paddle, having our heads beaten in by Nikolai Valuev (Ed: yeah, but would we have our keys?). Our economy, our Union, our freedom: all gone the way of the dodo.

Sounds familiar, right. Conservatives’ embrace of the civil liberties started with David Davis’s moment of madness, right? Wrong. After five years of Labour misgovernment, check out this election poster the Conservatives ran with in 1979.

Thank goodness Britain didn’t get them.

Mr. Hannan, I doff my cap to you…

Admirable.

Admirable.

It seems that as of this evening, Mr. Daniel Hannan, a true Conservative and libertarian (if he wasn’t so famed, I’d be lobbying him harder for regular guest posts) has stepped down from his position as appointed just two months ago on the front bench for Europe for the Conservative Party. And we fully understand.

While we wholly respect and understand Mr. David Cameron’s realistic calls for the ‘never again’ strategy, and we take seriously the legal and constitutional hurdles that Britain would now face to repatriate powers from Brussels- we can’t help but feel an awesome romantic allegiance to Daniel at this stand.

Of course, many would call the move foolish- and more the foolish they are for that. The United Kingdom is severely lacking in principled politicians such as Mr. Hannan, and KeepRightOnline are enormously proud that he once wrote for us on the European elections.

Mr. Hannan, I doff my cap to you. You may have served just two months in your position, but that certainly beats a certain Conservative Future National Executive Member. (Ed: Er… Less of that.)

Michael Caine becomes a Tory boy

We already knew that he was one of the soundest men in Britain. But now Michael Caine has come out to support the Conservatives at the next election, after years as a Labour supporter. He explained why in an interview in today’s Mail on Sunday.

We called him a legend last time out. Suggestions on a postcard for what we should call him this time. Until then, just bask, friends. Bask.

The British right; is it trite?

We’re on the cusp on what will doubtlessly be the most important General Election since 1997. Change (sigh) is in the air and confidence is high, but this editor, having spent the weekend with various ultra-sound (read: Dolphin Award) YBF and YAFers, wonders if the British right still knows how to get down (a reference to the libertarian half of the political spectrum).

What I mean is, amongst all our distaste and disgust for the Labour government and how our sovreignty and civil liberties have been outsourced to government organisations such as the European Parliament or the Equality and Human Rights Commission, we still aren’t revolting. Revolting the way our American chums do, of course, requires a certain sense of national pride. I know we as conservatives feel that, but maybe the problem lies with the fact that as libertarians, many people find it a wonder that you can still support or endorse a monarchy. Or maybe we’re just too damn lazy.

I know we have our campaign days and our rallies from time to time. Kudos to those who stood side by side with our Iranian friends in protest at their recent plight, but what about our own? Have the Labour government been successful in subversively ushering away our individual freedoms, appointing them to executive agencies and quangos? I’d like to think not, but what other reason is there for our shockingly laissez-faire approach to our rights?

Perhaps we exercise our protests on the blogosphere, or more remotely, on a local scale- but when you come across things like this, you can’t help but wonder why as a nation (not from a party political perspective), we haven’t marched en masse to Parliament Square and demanded an end to this constant and increasingly dangerous bureaucratic attack on the individual.

I don’t agree with a lot of what the tea-baggers in the U.S stand for, but I’ll be damned if I’m not impressed by the weight and passion of the movement.

So, is this a rallying cry? One blogger’s call to arms for the entire movement of conservatives and libertarians to fight together against a bully state and against big government? If that’s what you need it to be, then sure. I’m just trying to understand why we aren’t up in arms about this more often like our transatlantic cousins.

Right, I’m off for a cup of tea…
